Paraponera is a type of ant that inhabits in the humid lowland rainforests from Nicaragua south to Paraguay.

It is also well known by other names, such as Bullet ant and 24 Hours Ant. That is because it has a really really powerful stinger. In fact, it is rated as the most painful of all of the Arthropoda Kingdom according to the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. The sting is described to be as painful as being shot with a bullet and at least 24 hours of pain will follow after being stung.

Fun fact: Teen boys from the Satere-Mawe people of Brazil will purposely get stung by putting on gloves with bullet ants woven into them. To them, It is the rite of passage towards manhood.
